The Theatre has not hosted regular performances for over 80 years, and is a hidden gem. With your help, we will breathe new life into it.With your help, Alexandra Palace will once again have a theatre capable of hosting a wide range of performances, from plays to musicals, concerts and special events. There are a number of ways to support, including naming a seat in the balcony or one of the retractable seats in the stalls. There are a total of 323 seats in the balcony and 308 retractable seats in the stalls.Every donation we receive will go directly towards the restoration of the Theatre. Every donation over £25 will be credited on our donor board in the restored East Court – a permanent tribute to those who played a part in transforming Alexandra Palace.
Opened in 1875, the Theatre was a place of spectacle and delight where audiences of up to 2,500 people were entertained by pantomime, opera, drama, ballet, music hall and cinema. The impressive stage machinery was designed so that performers could appear, fly into the air and disappear through the stage.
More than 80 years have passed since the Theatre was last used and today it remains frozen in time with the majority of the original stage machinery still intact. We will restore the Theatre to its former glory, creating an adaptable theatrical space for audiences of up to 1,300. We will retain the magical look and feel of a “found space” conserving the historic wall painting. Modern technical facilities will create flexibility for a range of events including theatre, live music, cinema and private occasions.
